J W Scott, of Gaines Ala., we notice has been elected president of the Statesville fe male college. Mr Scott has signified his intention of accept ing the position as president. The school will be opened in September. Mr. Scott is a Vir ginian .by birth and has had considerable experience in teach ing. His wife and daughter are graduates of Miss Baldwin's School, Staunton, Va., and will help in making rmt a strong faculty for the college. Jeff Davis' Cap. . Mr. Jolin Paul Driver, a re-, tired citizen of Hagerstown, formerly a Government employe in Washington, who has had Jef ferson Davis' smoking cap in his possession since the Cwil War, presented the cap to Gsneral H Kyd Douglass, df Stonewall Jackson's slaff, desiring that it should go b;clr to some pf Jef ferson Davis' people or friends. General Douglas says he intends lending the cap to Jelferson Davis' gyindsoni, if he wishes it. It is a Turkish smoking cap, lined with dark red and em broidered with jet brai4, with a tassel hanging from the top.' " m A Boston dispatch of same date also says: "The hospital reports tonight show that between '60 and 40 persons were prostrated by the heat in this city today, threo of whom have since died."
